I have a soft spot for indie titles. They don’t have the big budget of a triple A title but for what they lack in terms of finance and man power, they always make up for with bucket loads of heart and determination. Triple-B-Titles’ Ring Runner: Flight of the Sages certainly fits the bill in that department. Powered by the hard work and dedication of Enrique and Paul Dryere, the two brothers have transformed a dream into reality. Without any prior experience in video game development, the two have spent the last six years painstakingly building Ring Runner, from the coding, to the soundtrack, even writing an accompanying novel.

Shadowrun has been around since its inception back in 1989. A fantasy world set in a dystopian, cyber-punk future where humans, orcs, elves, trolls, dwarves and many other sub-species co-exist. Cyber-netics, magic, mega-corporations and cyber-crimes are all part of the norm, setting a perfect playground in which many have spent countless hours immersed in the hundreds, upon hundreds of various media for more than two decades.

The man responsible for bringing this imagined world to life is Jordan Weisman, an American game designer, author and entrepreneur who looks set to bring the Shadowrun to the forefront yet again. Along with his talented team at Harebrained Schemes, the studio were able to amass a record amount of funding through Kickstarter to produce Shadowrun Returns, a sequel twenty-years in the making.

Today at Esperino, we begin the first in a new interview series affectionately dubbed ‘Fine Tuning’. We’ll be shining the spotlight on music composers and artists working in the video gaming sphere.

More often than not, we applaud the achievements of game developers for outstanding work, but how often do we pause to reflect on the individuals behind the emotional melodies or toe-tapping beats we’re listening to? It gives me great pleasure to introduce our first Fine Tuning interviewee, Music Composer and Producer Rich Vreeland, aka Disasterpeace.

It’s a busy year for Vancouver based developer Klei Entertainment. Coming off the recent success of their sequel Shank 2, the indepedent studio have dived back into the thick of what they do best with an all new intellectual property, Mark of the Ninja.

Thatgamecompany are the toast of the town, re-defining gaming and setting new benchmarks yet again as the studio launched their third title Journey on the PlayStation Network last month.

The studio has already experienced successes with flOw and Flower, however their latest work is the thing of dreams. Journey surpasses its predecessors soaring so high with its mystical scarf; it has earned the coveted title of fastest selling PSN game of all time. Not an easy feat for an indie developer who dared to be different.

Certain Affinity are no strangers to video games. They have worked on some of the biggest titles to be released this generation of gaming, developing content for Halo Reach, Call of Duty: Black Ops and Left 4 Dead to name a few. Maybe you haven’t heard of the Texan-based company, but you’ve most likely experienced their work without even knowing it.

Jess and I were fortunate enough to be granted time to quiz Max Hoberman, Certain Affinity founder, President and Creative Director on the studios’ latest Xbox LIVE Arcade title, Crimson Alliance. We had the opportunity to ask about the development of the RPG dungeon crawler, the controversy surrounding the free game download, future plans for Crimson Alliance & Certain Affinity, as well as finding out a little more detail on a game you may or may not have heard of: Halo Combat Evolved Anniversary.
