IGN to Merge with UGO

All Things Digital have reported that News Corp owned IGN.com is planning a merger with Hearst-owned UGO.com with plans supposedly being finalised over the weekend and an official announcement due any day.

The plan is to create a new gaming entity outside the influences of News Corp to better conduct gaming-centric news, reviews and culture for further growth at a much more rapid rate.

UGO Merge with IGN Banner
IGN reportedly turned over more than $10 million in profits this year from its generated $100 million revenue.

News Corp paid a whooping $650 million for IGN back in 2005. The emphasis of IGN.com is on ‘dude’ related content including such topics as video games, girls, movies and comics, serving as a direct rival to CBS-owned GameSpot.

Heart Interactive acquired UGO.com back in 2007 for $100 million but have struggled to find direction with its core management team departing UGO.com two years after the acquisition.

News Corp will have majority control over the new merged site that see IGN catering to a 19.7 million US audience over UGO’s 13.1 million.

More news to come in the coming days on the IGN and UGO assimilation. Whatever happens, I wish all the UGO and IGN staff all the best. 🙂
