One of the most highly anticipated Disney Infinity Play Set is of course the Toy Story set. Today we’ll be unboxing the newly released set so you can get a closer look at what to expect.
The Toy Story Play Set includes three pieces – Buzz Lightyear, Jessie and the Toy Story Playset piece.
I think you’ll agree this is one of the more colourful Disney Infinity Playsets to be released with the assortment of colours from Buzz’s almost radioactive green to Jessie’s pastel pink. The combination of bright colours really catches the eye.
First up, let’s go to “Infinity and beyond!” with Buzz Lightyear. The Space Ranger’s sculpt ties together the design aesthetics of Toy Story really nicely with the Disney Infinity appearance. The difference between the figurine and his animated self is hardly noticeable at all. What stands out the most is the green and purple accents on his space suit.
The detail hasn’t been lost on the back with the Star Command logo on the front, as well as his push buttons on the front. Of course the buttons don’t work since this is a non-articulated figure after all. His glider wing backpack looks almost identical to the movies!
As with each figure series so far, all Toy Story figures have the same base which differs compared with the other franchises. Standing on a wooden floorboard surface, the base is made to resemble Andy’s bedroom surface. It’s one of the nicer looking bases as the lighter colour and overall finish complement the look and feel of the characters perfectly.
Buzz’s thick eyebrows, large chin and glazed eyes complete his look. Buzz isn’t quite as heavy as say Sully from Monsters University, but there’s still quite a bit of weight for a figure of his stature. The only thing issue fans may have is his missing helmet visor. When showing the figure to friends, it was always the first thing people would ask me about. Granted, it would have been difficult to add a transparent helmet to the Buzz figure but it certainly would have taken Buzz to a whole new level.
I’ll be honest, Jessie isn’t my favourite character from Toy Story but I have to admit her sculpt is surprisingly good. Her black and white cow prints, wide-brim cowboy… I mean cowgirl hat suits her to a tee. Even her pose is spot on for her personality.
Jessie also shares the same design base as Buzz Lightyear, except she has a slightly raised boot, as if ready to get down for a quick boot scoot. Her overly enthusiastic expression is spot on and best of all, they even remembered to paint in her rosy cheeks!
I didn’t expect to like Jessie’s figure as much as I did, but she stands out the most in my Disney Infinity collection so far. The figures on their own look amazing; despite their ‘loud’ colours, but put these two together and they just work well together. The only thing missing is Woody, who will be available on November 28th, 2013.
Of course it’s great to have new figures, but you’re going to need a new world to play them in. The Toy Story Play Set comes with the Playset piece which opens up a new environment for players to explore.
As with all Playset pieces, this piece is translucent and sits on a hexagonal base. The piece is more Buzz than Woody with a detailed Star Command logo on the front side and Buzz’s spaceship blasting off on the rear. I really like this piece, not just for the world it opens up but the attention to detail in the design. It’s probably not going to be the most loved piece in the set, but still worth taking a moment to admire.
Lastly, there’s a collectible card with a unique web code on the back to access a digital version of both Buzz and Jessie in the Disney Infinity Toy Box app.
The Toy Story Play Set is my favourite set so far. I think it’s a combination of how much I enjoyed the movies and also how well the Toy Story universe works with Disney Infinity that makes this set stand out from the others released so far. The exciting array of colours and potential for new characters from the series (I hope they make Rex!) to be added will make the Toy Story universe a popular place to explore with family and friends.
Don’t leave it too long before buying this set as it is one of the most asked for and talked about sets to date. The Disney Infinity Toy Story Play Set is available now at all good retailers across Australia and New Zealand.
