If you’ve ever wondered what it might be like to roam the city streets as a souped-up assassin then wonder no more, as Arkane Studios has your back with The Knife of Dunwall. It’s a download that offers a fresh perspective – and even some new abilities – by having you step into the well-worn boots of Master Assassin, Daud… a character fans should remember as being one of the main instigators of the city’s problems. Dunwall City Trials provided a set of tough challenges for Dishonored at a suitably low cost, but is this the story-based DLC we’ve spent months waiting for?

Defiance is an interesting premise, being one of the few MMO (Massive-Multiplayer Online) titles to transcend to console (also available on PC) but more importantly, Defiance is a transmedia gaming experience closely knit in with its sci-fi series counterpart. Trion Worlds have converted the SyFy series to a third-person shooter RPG with all the depth of story-telling sci-fi fans have enjoyed for so long, but also the dynamic versatility to incorporate key storylines into the video game. The concept seems brilliant but does it work in practice?

The Tomb Raider series has been looting the hearts of gamers since 1993 when busty English archaeologist Lara Croft stepped onto the artefact hunting scene in her figure hugging tank top and all too revealing short shorts. It was a different time back then as her adolescent male fans rallied behind her overly sexualized appearance. Although her cup size grew in subsequent titles, her fan base diminished as Tomb Raider became less about its namesake of raiding tombs and more about fan service.

For me, 2013 has been a rather dull year in video gaming, as there has yet to be enough games that pique my interest. While there are certainly some franchises that focus on capitalizing on popular demand more than the gamers’ experience, Bioshock, in its two previous games, seems more intent to captivate the player’s attention and imagination with more than just gimmicks. With a rocky road to release for Bioshock: Infinite, one begins to wonder if it will affect the overall quality of the product.

Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 3 is a continuation of the highly acclaimed Ultimate Ninja Storm series by CyberConnect2. Beginning back to 2003 with the original Ultimate Ninja titles on the PlayStation 2, the series evolved into the re-branded Ultimate Ninja Storm series for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. So with a fourth title for the current console generation (the third being last year’s Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm Generations), is it more of the same or something entirely new?

Fist of the North Star: Ken’s Rage 2 is one of those games I really want to be amazing. Tecmo Koei’s Musou (aka. Dynasty Warriors) style gameplay with the over-the-top violence of Fist of the North Star seems like a perfect one-two combination but the final product leaves much to be desired when compared against the Dynasty Warriors flagship series. Ken’s Rage 2 is a step in the right direction, but perhaps just too small of a footstep unfortunately.

I have a love-hate relationship with Raiden. I found him particularly annoying in Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty due to his incessant whining and indecisiveness, yet the Gray Fox-inspired gear and preference to high frequency blade had me intrigued and since then, Raiden has evolve into one of Hideo Kojima’s most notable characters from the Metal Gear universe. More than a decade on since MGS2, Raiden makes a return to the starring role in his own title once more, but can Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance recapture and convert a new audience to the ways of Mr. Lightning Bolt?

When I first heard about Dead Space 3, I must admit I wasn’t overly excited. The directional shift to action-orientated gameplay over survival-horror and the obvious heavy emphasis on co-op play didn’t particularly speak volumes to me, or fill me with much confidence for that matter. However after experiencing the demo, my opinion quickly shifted as it became clear Visceral Games had invested solid design ideas into the third instalment of the franchise and this would be a title to keep an eye on in 2013.

‘Cloak engaged’. It’s the deep, synthesised sounds of those two little words that have become so synonymous with this series, which has always tried to set itself apart from the competition with a unique style of play. In Crysis 3, you play as Prophet – a stronger, faster, more invisible soldier just perfect for taking down the oppressive Cell and alien forces. Fans of the series will remember Prophet as a reborn cybernetic warrior with little if any physical humanity left. To his enemies, he’s the greatest threat around; a proficient killer looking to throw off the balance of power and change the world.
