If the purpose of the show was to build anticipation for games yet to be played then it’s a case of mission accomplished, though undoubtedly the gaming masses will have a few titles (or perhaps even hardware) in mind that they simply can’t wait to get their hands on.

Yet wait they shall, as aside from a few noteworthy exceptions, the 2012 holiday season is now looking regrettably sparse. But what games will be worth the anticipation and exactly what is it that makes them so special?

Darksiders II serves as one of the shining gems in THQ’s crown of 2012 titles, and with good and slightly sinister reason. The original Darksiders developed by Vigil Games turned out to be a sleeper hit in 2010, surprising critics and gamers alike with its high production values, clean execution and depth of gameplay. At THQ’s Pre-E3 event in Melbourne, I was given the opportunity to get hands-on with the sequel, taking to the controller with an almost death-like grip.

Lost Planet 3 marks a return for the franchise, receiving a shock reveal at Captivate earlier this year after its predecessor Lost Planet 2 failed to make an impact with critics back in 2010. In an attempt to re-ignite the after-burners, Capcom have outsourced development duties to Californian-based Spark Unlimited (Turning Point, Legendary) who may not have a track record for producing major successes, however the pre-E3 hands-on demo does point to much more promising results.
